Bond of Iron: Master and Slave at Buffalo Forge
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (May, 1994)
Authors: Charles B. Dew and Charles B. Drew
Average review score:

Read this important Book!
This is a new, different telling of an old story. It really challenges what many have come to believe about slavery and the relationship between master and servant. Highlights the distinction between skilled and unskilled labor that is at the core of so many social problems (race, sex, class), yet is so often overlooked.

The Boy Who Drew Cats

Authors: Margaret Hodges, Aki Sogabe, and Lafcadio Hearn
Average review score:

A nice retelling of a classic Japanese fairy tale
"The Boy Who Drew Cats" is based on the famous Japanese legend about the celebrated 15th-century artist Sesshu Toyo, who ink drawings at a Zen monastery were said to be so realistic that they would sometimes spring to life. As adapted by Margaret Hodges, this story tells of a young boy who lived in a small village and was sent off to become a priest, since he was very clever but quite weak and small. However, while the boy quickly learned what the priest had to teach him, he one small problem. He could not stop drawing cats and not because he was a bad kid but because he really could not help it. Drawing all those cats got the young boy into trouble but one terrifying night they miraculously proved their worth. This is a simple little story and the chief charm of "The Boy Who Drew Cats" is the artwork Aki Sogabe created with cut paper, watercolor, and airbrush. But the story can also convince you that cats, who tend to live in this world as if they ruled it, can be quite useful when necessary. This book is aimed at younger children and if they like this story you can find other versions of it in collections of classic Japanese fairy tales.
